Dr. Violet Oaklander has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Master of Arts Degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, and a Master of Science Degree in Special Education with emotionally disturbed children, and she is certified by the Los Angeles Gestalt Therapy Institute. She is also certified by the Play Therapy Association as a play therapist supervisor, and she is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She is the Director of the Violet Oaklander Institute, devoted to the training of professionals who work with children and adolescents. In addition she is a board member of the International Board of Examiners of Certified Play Therapists as well as a certified supervisor of child psychotherapists and play therapists. She has won several awards for her contribution to the mental health field.
The author of the book and tapes included in the Max Sound catalog, Dr. Oaklander has also written several journal articles and book chapters on psychotherapeutic work with children. She is the founder and former director of the Center for Child and Adolescent Therapy in Southern California. She has been in private practice since 1973.

Dr. Oaklander has been a regular instructor for the extension programs of the University of California campuses in Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and San Diego and she is an adjunct faculty member of Pacifica Graduate Institute located in Carpenteria, CA.. She travels extensively throughout the country and the world giving training seminars on her approach to working with children and adolescents. She lives in Santa Barbara, California, where she offers training, consults, and supervision to child and adolescent psychotherapists. Her unique approach to working with children -- which combines Gestalt Therapy theory, philosophy, and practice with a variety of expressive techniques -- has won international recognition. She is currently working on a new book.
